Use Up Those Leftovers!

Managing leftovers is a challenge we all face! Throwing food away is just like throwing money away. With a little time, organization and using a little ingenuity, leftovers can be dealt with efficiently.

Or serve along with a family favorite side dish or salad.Bread can also be used to make croutons. Just cut the bread into cubes. Toss with melted butter, seasoned salt, parmesan cheese, and whatever other seasonings you like. Bake in a 300 degree oven till the cubes are golden brown. Now you are able to have some fun. You want to make one of those best ground beef recipes? No problem. You are already half way there. Whilst your meat is browning, simply defrost the onions and then add them along with the other ingredients. You have the beginning of Chili con carne, a Beef and Noodle Casserole or a Ground Beef Goulash.Phosphorus 27 % Pantothenic Acid 17 %3/4 cup (175 mL) or 175 g container vanilla yogurtFreeze batches of fried onion.Organize your freezerNutrient % RDI Nutrient % RDIUse these croutons to top salads or casseroles or even as a snack.Have a set place in your kitchen where you keep your freezer containers. Stack them logically according to size and use. Nearby, have a drawer that keeps your freezer labels, marking pens, plastic bags, waxed paper and freezer tags. Big Daddy's Fruit Freezer

(NC)Real men eat this yogurt! It's a truly fabulous frozen dessert or snack. So fast and easy that even your favourite I-hate-to-cook guy will like to make it, and so good that he'll want to make it every day. Makes one delicious man-size portion.

However, make friends with your freezer and this, in fact, does become possible.Place baking dish in pan of hot water (water should be about 1" deep) and bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 40 - 45 minutes. Test for doneness by inserting a knife 1 inch from edge - it should come out clean.Place bread crumbs in a 1 1/2 quart baking dish. Stir remaining ingredients together and pour over bread crumbs, mixing well.Vitamin C 188 % Vitamin B6 27 %This almost seems a no-brainer but it is worth being reminded. If you are going to make one batch of your favorite Beef Curry Recipe, make two - one for now, and one for the freezer. Apply the same rule to any stews, simple ground beef recipes and even chicken casseroles. Most of these dishes are good natured and will freeze well. I love nothing more than being able to haul out a nutritious meal from the freezer on those stressed-out days. Moreover, I know that there are no preservatives, additives and colorants in the food that I have frozen. Plus, my freezer meal has cost nothing like the supermarket equivalent and always tastes better.Ingredients and PreparationTry to be disciplined as to how you pack your freezer. Try to put ready-made meals on the same shelf or in the same drawer. Similarly, frozen raw ingredients should go together. Put "little bits" together - egg whites, chopped frozen fresh herbs, leftover sauces and so on.When you have a chance, chop a whole load of onions. I often do 12 large onions at a time. Pour a little oil into a large pot and fry the onions until they soften and take on a deep caramel color. You may find it easier to do this in two pots. Cool the onions and then transfer equal quantities to freezer containers. I would transfer the equivalent of one to two onions to each container. Label each container and then freeze.- News CanadaVitamin B12 49 % Magnesium 25 %Freeze batches of a basic Bechamel Sauce RecipePer ServingRiboflavin 40 % Zinc 20 %1/2 very ripe banana, peeled and frozen

Do you need 30 minute meals? Make friends with your freezer and discover how.

We all need quick dinner recipes and 30 minute meals are at the top of the list. However, we also want nutritious, tasty, low-cal, low-carb meals...NOW! Does this sound familiar? And as much as we all love the idea of a homemade beef stew or a luscious homemade meatball recipe, more often than not, there just is not the time to produce that kind of food after we have rushed in from work, school or ferrying the kids.

Favorite Bread Pudding
  • 3 cups soft bread crumbs
  • 2 cups milk, scalded with 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon or nutmeg
Freeze breadcrumbs and egg whitesDouble up your recipesThe same applies to egg whites. They freeze very well for a couple of months. Put the leftover egg whites into a container and mark HOW MANY THERE ARE ie "3 egg whites." Next time you feel inspired to whip up meringues or need egg white for an icing recipe, all you have to do is defrost them on low in the microwave and you're set. Here's what you get from a serving (one recipe) of our Big Daddy's Fruit Freezer based on Health Canada's Recommended Daily Intake (RDI's) for nutrients.Organize your freezer labels, pens etcLeftover onions, green peppers can be chopped and sealed in zipper-top bags and kept in the freezer. Producing easy healthy recipes will suddenly become a pleasure. With a little bit of thought and simple meal planning, you can save time, money and your sanity!Leftover bread can be used to make bread pudding. If your family doesn't eat the heels of a loaf of bread, keep a bag in the freezer and add the heels until you have enough. No, I have not lost the plot! If you have leftover breadcrumbs, simply pop them in a freezer container, mark them and freeze them. Next time you want to whizz up meatballs or crumb a piece of fish, the work has been done for you already.Energy 373 kcal, Carbohydrate 82 g, Protein 11 g, Fat 3 gBe sure to refrigerate leftovers promptly and use them within one or two days or freeze. If you have any doubt about whether a food is still safe to eat, throw it out!If you have leftover mashed potatoes, besides the obvious potato cakes, try this: Fry an egg and serve over a warm mound of mashed potatoes. Makes a different kind of supper.Delicious warm!A particularly helpful shelf in our freezer is the LUNCH BOX shelf. In this drawer there are all makings for healthy lunchboxes. There is leftover chicken, frozen in between layers of waxed paper. There are cooked burgers or ham. There are wraps, croissants, or muffins. This means that when we make lunchboxes at night it is easy for the whole family to get involved and hone in on the correct drawer. It seems to simplify things and is certainly cheaper than take-out food.

So, just as you take charge of certain areas of your life, take charge of your freezer! Producing easy healthy recipes will suddenly become a pleasure. With a little bit of thought and simple meal planning, you can save time, money and your sanity!

How To Choose The Perfect Refrigerator Or Freezer

Ask any chef or commercial cook, and they will tell you that having the right amount of refrigerator and freezing space can make be the difference between an efficient and well-run kitchen, and a disorganized wasteful one. Unfortunately for most of us, when we open our fridge or freezer door we are confronted with a mess of poorly organized and overstocked shelves. In fact, these days our fridges and freezers have become more of a cluttered out of mind, out of sight storage area, rather than an important implement we use to preserve our food.

CoolCell FTS30 Features:CoolCell FTS30 uses a patented alloy-based micro-convection heat removal technology to uniformly freeze 30-vial batches in a compact space. It is ideal for all cells including cell lines, stem cells, yeast, blood and other primary cells. The durable, insulated design of the CoolCell FTS30 ensures easy and safe portability of frozen cells, insertion and removal of 30 vials at once, and lids that open easily even when frozen.Make sure your fridge and freezer is easy to use and maintain. For instance by buying a Frost Free freezer you ensure you will never have to defrost your freezer again. Also, look out for easy to clean shelves and compartments, preferably with glass shelves that only need a simple one-off wipe down for cleaning. Auto-Defrost fridges are also recommended since they automatically adjust the internal temperature of your fridge to avoid frosts."The launch of these CoolCell products marks the beginning of a significant expansion of our cell cryopreservation product line," said BioCision CEO Rolf Ehrhardt, MD, PhD. "We will be releasing additional sample cryopreservation products over the coming months to meet the growing demands of cell research, cell therapy, and the diagnostic market. Our goal is to continue to deliver both performance and simplicity for sample handling and cryopreservation."

Finally, always consider the environmental credentials of a particular model and brand. After all, not only is an energy efficient refrigerator and freezer better for the environment, it is also much better for your wallet since you save money in energy costs!

The White Mountain Ice Cream Freezer - A Review

This article is a review of the White Mountain ice cream machine and more specifically, the hand-poweredhand cranked model. If you regularly read review, you know that, you usually have to wait until the conclusion to find out if the product is worth buying or not. Well I'm going to say up front that I really enjoy using this ice cream machine. So I guess the real review here is why you should choose a hand-cranked model over an automatic model.

BioCision ® is the leading global developer of benchtop sample and assay management tools.Laboratories in organizations such as Genentech, Gilead, and University of California Berkeley are using BioCision's tools to ensure reproducible sample handling and preparation. Most recently, Roslin Cellab , the preeminent incubator for stem cell research and a leading provider of stem cell research services to life sciences companies, has selected BioCision's® CoolCell® freezing container for cryopreservation of human embryonic stem cell lines.Headquartered in Mill Valley, Calif., BioCision was founded in 2007 by a group of scientists, biomedical engineers and drug development experts. For more information, visit www.biocision.com .

In conclusion, the best thing about the White Mountain ice cream machine, in addition to the really great ice cream, is how when I was a kid, it always brought the family together. I grew up in the southern part of the U.S. and hand-cranked ice cream maker were everywhere at social events, be it, family get togethers or out camping during the summer.

BioCision Launches New Tools for Cell Cryopreservation

BioCision, the coolprep™ company, today announced the release of three new cryopreservation systems: CoolCell®FTS™30 , the first large-capacity, high-density cell freezing system; CoolCell SV2 for freezing cells in larger diameter 2ml vials; and CoolCell 5ml for large cryovial freezing. All CoolCell freezing solutions deliver a controlled freezing rate of -1°C/minute in a -80°C freezer, with high reproducibility of freezing profiles and consistent cell viability and function after thawing. The patented alloy-based technology allows maintenance-free operation and is a significant alternative to conventional freezing methods or programmable freezers.

Along with CoolCell FTS30, BioCision is introducing two additional products: (1) CoolCell SV2 for freezing larger diameter 2ml vials, such as Crystal Zenith®1 vials for freezing dendritic cells and other cells used in basic and clinical research applications; and (2) CoolCell 5ml for large-volume cryovials. Like all other CoolCell products, these two new additions are also maintenance-free, require no alcohol and deliver rate-controlled cell freezing of -1°C/minute in a -80°C freezer.Ideal for all cells including cell lines, stem cells, PBMC, primary cells and yeast Can be used "off the shelf" without any maintenance or pre-cooling Prepares samples for archive storage in four hours Sized to fit compactly inside any -80°C freezer Holds 30 screw-cap 2ml cryotubes An inner removable FTS vial module enables efficient freezing, transfer, and storage of vials in just one stepMore CoolCell SolutionsAbout BioCisionThat said, even if you are a couple, or live alone, your lifestyle might demand you get a bigger fridge and freezer. For example, if you entertain a lot, you will soon become frustrated with a small fridge that does not accommodate food prepared for large dinner parties."This is by far and away the best benchtop technology to enter the field of cell cryopreservation for decades," said John Gardner, senior project leader at Roslin Cellab. "We have compared the BioCision CoolCell to our old conventional method of cryopreservation and found it to be easier, safer and most importantly of all, our cell lines were recovered with reproducibly higher viability yields post-thaw, and subsequent ongoing growth was improved."The advantages of ease-of-use, elimination of user error, and highly reproducible performance have made BioCision's products the new standard for benchtop sample management. BioCision's products are sold worldwide through distributors in more than two dozen countries in all major geographic regions. They have been adopted by leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, contract research organizations and major academic and healthcare institutions worldwide .The second reason to use a hand cranked model is that you can use it just about anyplace. As a kid, my family did a lot of camping and going to the lake. And for us, it was customary to have a big BBQ just about every evening. After the food was gone, a quick run to the local gas station for some ice and pretty soon we'd all be enjoying some homemade ice cream. You won't be able to do that without a generator and if you're using one of the more modern canister type ice cream makerfreezer, you'll need to be able to keep the canister and ingredients cold the entire your out. With a hand-cranked model this is a snap.(1) Crystal Zenith® is a registered trademark of Daikyo Seiko, Ltd.In conclusion, the best thing about the White Mountain ice cream machine, in addition to the really great ice cream, is how when I was a kid, it always brought the family together. I grew up in the southern part of the U.S. and hand-cranked ice cream maker were everywhere at social events, be it, family get togethers or out camping during the summer."In many areas of biological research, the ability to freeze and thaw samples of cells is absolutely critical to successful experiments. Yet, all too often, this simple procedure is subject to considerable and unnecessary variation, as well as high cost. CoolCell FTS30 solves this problem," said Brian Schryver, BioCision's Vice President of Research and Development. "Selling for a fraction of the price of commercial cell cryopreservation devices and sized to fit compactly inside any -80°C freezer, this new CoolCell makes a powerful research tool available to all scientists."When it comes to updating your refrigerator or freezer, you need to think about a number of things. The first and most obvious consideration is the size and capacity of both. The larger the family, naturally the larger the fridge and freezer will need to be.The company's patent-pending products enable collection, organization, protection, freezing, thawing, cooling and cryopreservation of samples in a consistent and highly reproducible manner. BioCision's line of benchtop tools include CoolRack®, CoolSink™ and CoolTray™ thermo-conductive tube and plate modules; CoolBox™ ice-free portable cooling/freezing containers; CoolCell® alcohol-free maintenance-free cell freezing containers; and accessories. Finally, always consider the environmental credentials of a particular model and brand. After all, not only is an energy efficient refrigerator and freezer better for the environment, it is also much better for your wallet since you save money in energy costs! So if you have decided to get a hand powered ice cream machine, what is the best way to use it. Well the best way is unquestionably with family. My White Mountain ice cream maker is a 6 quart unit. That's a gallon and a half of ice cream, which of course takes a big crew to consume. But more importantly than that, all those eaters can help out cranking the ice cream. When I was a kid, usually my grandma would make the ice cream mix, and my cousins and I would do the churning. My little brother would sit on a folded towel on top of the ice cream freezer. This helps to keep the ice cream freezer from moving around while cranking. And because these ice cream machines aren't water tight, as the ice melts, some of it will leak out so my grandmother would also put the ice cream maker in an old wash bin. You'll also want to wash the ice cream machinethoroughly when your done with it. Anyone, who lives in America's rust belt can attest, rock salt and metals don't get along.

DTE Energy Recycles 35,000th Refrigerator as Part of a Home Energy Efficiency Program That Pays Customers $40 Reward

DETROIT, July 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- DTE Energy is offering to pay customers $40 to recycle their old refrigerators and freezers, as part of the company's Appliance Recycling Program.

If you are looking for a standard fridge that features a freezer on the top, and a refrigerated section on the bottom, this manufacturer should satisfy you. LG takes a standard design and refreshes it with curved doors, hinges that you cannot see, and energy efficiency. This is clearly not the same fridge that you typically saw decades ago in most kitchens, as this brand has updated it while keeping the traditional appearance. If you are more into the appearance of the side-by-side, which is also considered conventional, you can still find an LG fridge freezer that is perfect for you. This manufacturer offers several, most of which have a water dispenser that is taller than average, as well as an extra spacious interior so that you can store lots of food. The freezer door is the bad side of the tracks, or in this case the wrong side of the warm air. Every time you open the freezer door the temperature of these items immediately begins to rise. The real problem is if the door remains open for a longer period of time, like when you are putting away groceries or staring blankly at the frozen bags trying to decide what to have for dinner. In that case the freezer will usually kick up its production of cold air, but since these items are hanging out in the warm air of the kitchen, they are usually too far away to benefit from the cool breeze blowing through the better neighborhoods.Last spring, her daughter purchased a home nearby and agreed to host the larger family gatherings. Cook no longer needs a second refrigerator and is now looking forward to saving electricity and reducing her energy bill through the DTE Energy recycling program.Just like people in a community contribute to the quality of the neighborhood, items in your freezer actually contribute to the cold. Once an item is frozen its cold temperature helps to maintain the overall temperature in the freezer. Leaving a lot of open space requires your freezer to work harder to create more cold air to circulate. When you don't have enough food to fill your freezer simply stock extra icepacks or plastic containers partially filled with water. That way, when you need the extra space for food, you can just store the icepacks/containers elsewhere until the freezer is low again. These are the mean streets of Freezerville where only the hearty stock can make it: frozen veggies, flour, ice packs, etc. Even though the door seems like a place you wouldn't want Mr. and Mrs. Fudgebar to raise their ice cubes, remember that even the undesirable neighborhoods in Freezerville are prime real-estate. Don't let any of it go unused.SOURCE DTE EnergyThe program, which is part of the Your Energy Savings initiative at DTE Energy, has recycled 35,000 older refrigerators and freezers since it began in 2009. All of the recycled collected appliances are taken apart at a recycling plant in Livonia, operated by JACO Environmental. Ninety five percent of the materials in the refrigerators are recycled, and various hazardous materials properly handled.Southfield resident Jacquelyn Cook decided to take advantage of the program and is having her decades-old second refrigerator removed by DTE Energy.DTE Energy has a program to pick up and recycle old refrigerators and freezers. If a consumer buys a new refrigerator or freezer after July 26 at a participating Sears store, they can select a convenient time for a crew to deliver the new unit to their home, and haul away the old unit, free of charge. Replacing an old inefficient refrigerator or freezer can save customers as much as $150 a year on energy costs. In real-estate there are many things that affect property values, but in your freezer there is just one. Temperature! In the same way that mild climates and good weather contribute to the high property values in coastal cities, maintaining the desired temperature is the ONLY determining factor in Freezerville. In real-estate you have probably heard that the three most important things are location, location, location. The same holds true in Freezerville. You can break it down into three neighborhoods: the back of the freezer the palatial estates and gated communities; the front of the freezer nice neighborhoods with clean parks and normal' sized houses; and the freezer door the rough part of town where you hope your car doesn't break down.If you prefer an updated kind, consider the French door fridge, which features the freezer on the bottom and two doors on top for the refrigerated section. This kind of LG fridge freezer often has tons of space, particularly for the refrigerated part, as well as a drawer on the bottom that pulls out easily. Of course, this kind comes with all the great features that most appliances come with, and then some, such as extra drawers and large shelves to keep food fresh and organized.
